October

Another month has come and gone in my residency. This past month, I have been in survival mode, just trying to keep up on things at work.

In October, I was rotating on trauma surgery. This meant 4am wake up. Work from 5:30 am to usually 6pm daily. I had a day off two weeks ago, I believe. Of course, I did have a vacation for a week at the beginning of the month. But, all work, no play makes Sam a dull boy. This past month has stunk too. I think I find solace in griping, however. I also find myself cussing a lot more. They're just words to me, but clearly they do have a vigor to them for which other words cannot suffice.

Of note from the past month...

...At one time, I was taking care of two alleged murderers at the same time. Both were continuously monitored by county police, to be arrested upon my discharging them from the hospital. It's hard to treat a person who killed someone who is complaining of pain. Sympathy is in short supply. On the other hand, far be it from me to not acquiesce to every wish of someone who isn't afraid to kill. Had another patient who took on some prison guards. Not gonna cross him either, although he's probably wishing he was in the hospital right now rather than under the careful watch of some pissed off prison guards.

...I haven't been outside much. Probably a total of 2 hours over the last 21 days.

...I worked overnight the night of the time change. As much fun as those of you who are recreational sleepers had on Saturday night, it sucks when you're up and working, and you watch the clocks turn back.

...My PlayStation 2 stopped playing discs yesterday, eliminating two forms of entertainment for me--games and DVDs. This comes just after signing up for Netflix. All I've got now is network television (no cable).

...which means I get far too many celebrity news shows and infomercials.

...Law & Order, any version, is fantastic.

...Is my last name really that tricky? I get phone calls at work from many different nurses during the day, meaning that I must answer to many versions of my name. "Carr" has been the most common. There's always the hesitant attempts, too--"Ca...Car...Carr-y??"

...This is also complicated by the fact that one of my supervising physicians is named Khare (pronounced Car-ee), but looks like "care," which is how my last name is pronounced.

...Great to hear from old friends. Drop a line if you can.

You've come a long way from serving up saltios at Zapata's!

Great to check in and read about how life really is for res. docs...it sounds completely miserable! I am proud of you for hanging in there...I can't imagine the discipline it takes! Congrats, Dr. Caire (pronounced care without hesitation!!).

Hope things will slow down for you soon!!

Hey Sam!
First of all, I agree about the name...how hard is it to sound out Caire?? I guess it's the "i" in there that throws them off....I always got great guesses with "Teague" too.

Secondly, I'm exhausted just reading about your October!! I hope November is a little easier. I can't imagine the hours you're putting in, or the stress of taking care of murderers...it makes my job as preschool teacher & mommy sound like a walk in the park!! But, it's all going to be worth it when you are out there on your own and done with this residency stuff!

It's good to hear what's going on with you. Take care of yourself!

Wow...you have been so busy this month. I can't imagine how you keep those kind of hours either! Like Chelsea said, makes being a mom and preschool teacher (I teach with Chelsea) seem like nothing.

I love Law & Order too -- my fav is SVU -- which was excellent last night.

Sam,

I wish you were in Lubbock playing with my parents' puppies like the summer of 94 or 95 (which ever was my summer of Sam). It was good to find your blog. Maybe I can keep up with you better.

Thanks for saving murderers. It makes me feel better for the being the girl who threw up on the attending when I had the stomach bug. Maybe there are other patients they hate more.

Try to get some rest and have fun. A live indoors can not bne very exciting for you!
Love,
Ashley Core Nelson

Just a line from an old friend. Got your site from Jenni Trietsch. Have enjoyed chuckling my way through your traumatic/dramatic storytelling. As with all things, this time, too, will pass. Sounds like you won't be looking back on it with too much favor. It's nice to get a different perspective on life. I've been spending lots of time in a Philipino hospital visiting and caring for someone lately....we should compare notes. At least you have central A/C, right??
God bless ya,
Sarah Booker

Hey Sam,
sounds like you're having a lot of fun. The pediatric world of the little people appears to be kinder than the mean ER world -- but then again you guys make twice as much money, and don't have to pay an office staff or talk about breast feeding.

you get to do a lot of cool things everyday.

I hope to see you soon at some dark, dirty bar in a small West
Texas town

p.s. -- I like to see that all things Law and Order are still a passion for you.
